History
The Sir Hubert Murray Stadium is one of PNG’s iconic Sporting events venues and shares a deep
history linked to some of the most momentous occasions in Papua New Guinea.
The Stadium was built in 1969 when PNG first hosted the South Pacific Games. It was named
after Sir John Hubert Plunkett Murray, a judge and Lieutenant-Governor of Papua.
The official Flag lowering ceremony of the Australian Flag on September 15th, 1975 was held at
the stadium signifying the end of colonial rule and giving birth to a free independent State of
Papua New Guinea.
Safety & Accessibility
The Sir Hubert Murray Stadium is a fully secured venue with 24hrs/7days a week security and is
monitored by CCTV. The Stadium also utilizes other law enforcement partners that assist on
event days.
The stadium is accessible by 2 primary points of entry from the northern side to exiting from the
western side and a total of 9 gates.
